RULES OF THE CHARLES ENSLEY SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The Program

The Charles Ensley Scholarship is a one-time annual scholarship in the amount of $2,500 which will be awarded to members of the Union who have been accepted to the Murphy Institute of the CUNY School of Professional Studies (“Murphy Institute”) in any of the following programs: Certificate in Labor Studies, Advanced Certificate in Labor Studies or 30-credit Master’s Degree in Labor Studies. Descriptions of these programs can be obtained from their website at sps.cuny.edu/labor programs. 

This scholarship is designed to be a source of financial assistance to defray some of the tuition costs.

Eligibility

Applicants for the Charles Ensley Scholarship must meet the following requirements to be eligible to be considered for a scholarship:

  • You must be an active member in good standing for at least 12 months of the Social Service Employees Union Local 371, AFSCME, AFL-CIO.
  • You must not have been awarded a Charles Ensley Scholarship in the past..
  •  Proof of Acceptance must be provided with your application to any of the following programs; Certificate in Labor Studies, Advanced Certificate in Labor Studies or 30-credit Master’s Degree in Labor Studies.
  • You must complete and submit an application, with all supporting documentation to the Administrator of the Charles Ensley Educational and Scholarship Fund, postmarked no later than December 19, 2015.

 

Announcement of awards will be made by January 16, 2016.

Note – Scholarships will be awarded each year by Lottery. It will be conducted by the Trustees of the Educational Fund.  Those not selected for an award, may have another opportunity if any individual selected is unable to pursue a program of study.

Exclusions - Trustees of Charles Ensley Educational and Scholarship Fund, Union officers and Union Staff are not eligible to apply for this scholarship.

Use of Scholarships – Scholarship payments may only be used for tuition expenses.  All other expenses, including books, fees and supplies are the responsibility of the student. The Scholarship will be made payable to the Murphy Institute on behalf of the recipients.

Unexpended Funds – Scholarship funds not used by awardees, due to early termination of studies (drop-out, etc), revert to the Fund and are used to provide additional awards.
